Deep in Minnesota's north woods, where the pines crowd the roadside and every gas station sells both live bait and fudge, you'll meet the north country's most reliable celebrity. He doesn't tour. He doesn't do interviews. He just stands there, magnificently, while every passing car slows to a crawl.
This piece began as a photograph from one of Lisa's northern Minnesota drives, then took on new life through her digital artistry — the antlers, the attitude, the unmistakable sense that he knows something you don't.
Minnesota Moose
In the land where pines reach high,
And mosquitoes buzz with glee,
Lives a moose who's always sly,
A forest celebrity.
His antlers serve as resting spots,
For birds who need a break,
And tourists try their best to spot
His grin, for photos' sake.
"Oh, another picture? Sure, why not,"
He thinks with moosey cheer,
"I'll stand here like a statue shot,
And pose just once a year."
His smile's a bit like Mona Lisa's,
Mysterious and wry,
You'd wonder if he's hiding secrets,
Or just watching clouds go by.
Oh, Minnesota Moose, so grand,
With humor in your eyes,
You're the king of this fine land,
Underneath the northern skies.
Coming soon: watch this stop come to life.
